Had Hail, Caesar! been a sprawling Netflix original, (or even an FX original, I’m looking at you, Fargo) following the Eddie Mannix character around the old Hollywood backdrop as he interacted with the players, went about his day-to-day, and wrestled with a season long decision regarding a potential offer from another place... it would have worked MUCH better than cramming elements of an entire television season into a plotless non story movie where the audience wonders why George Clooney has literally been sitting in a chair unattended for the last 45 minutes.
As a character study and a throwback to old Hollywood – things I love, hell I platinumed [Playstation 3 game] LA Noire, I’d give Hail, Caesar! a B-.
As for being a movie as a whole, it’s a “C-” for “Come on Coens, you’re better than this!”
